SP HOLDINGS - PORTABLE PUMP SYSTEM / Job No: # 3161

DESCRIPTION

South Pacific Holdings who operate breweries in both Boroko (Port Moresby) and Lae in Papua New Guinea approached MPA to design two replacements for some of their existing mobile pump controllers. SP Holdings use several pumps mounted on trolleys in their cellars and in other areas of their brewery. These pumps perform a variety of tasks including CIP (clean in place). The original pump system consisted of pushbuttons, DOL starters and electromechanical timers. The CIP operations, for which the mobile pumps are predominately used, requires frequent stopsstarts, often for periods of up to an hour. The old system proved both complex and inflexible for the operator, resulting in excessive water wastage. The controllers engineered by MPA, to overcome the issues SP Holdings faced, consisted of a Siemens S7-214 PLC and a TD 200 Operator Display. SP Holdings also specified a Danfoss variable speed drive to drive the pump.

Engineers at MPA decided to program and install the necessary components in a stainless steel enclosure and fully test the unit prior to shipment to Boroko, Papua New Guinea. This ensured trouble free installation of the unit once on site. The PLC program implemented by MPA allows operators the flexibility to change both the step times and the sequences to suit their needs. The operator is now able to start the cleaning cycle and then continue with other work, while the controller continues to perform the sequence as programmed. Ultimately this means the cost of the new controller will be recouped, through reduced expenditure, within months! The newly designed system was a simple, economical solution to the problem. It minimised wastage, improved operator productivity and not only met, but also exceeded the client requirements.
