PAPER CONVERTING COMPANY - PLANT UPGRADE Job No:# 1702 # 1857 DESCRIPTION Paper Converting Company commissioned MPA to undertake the first stage of their plant upgrade at Creastmead, Brisbane. This project involved modifications to complex conveyor systems and Hayssen machinery. The electrical upgrade required major changes to the Hayssen machinery, which manufactures and wraps toilet rolls. MPA retrofitted the control systems, and the packaging and wrapping mechanisms. The machines’ previously limited wrapping capacity was reengineered by MPA to increase by fourfold the variety of rolls managed, while machine and conveyor modifications facilitated the newly increased volume and diversity of packaging. MPA also supplied, programmed and installed new PLCs, Operator Panels, Software, and Variable Speed Drives, with MPA’s newly designed networks providing machine-to machine communication, thereby expediting problem solving and production time. In the revised system, PLCs control the adjoining conveyor system in conjunction with message displays and operator panels (affixed to each machine). This provides the convenience of continuous production status to operators. Each operator panel and PLC is linked internally, machine-to-machine via the Profibus DP network. A special feature of this network is the on-line or remote programming of any PC within the system. This allows operators greater flexibility and control over production. The improvements implemented in the upgrade have led to increased productivity, reduced downtime, a more consistent product and increased reliability of machine function. Ultimately for Paper Converting Company this means a system that is more cost effective. TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS For this project MPA selected the Siemens range of OP S7-300 PLCs, OP7 Operator Panels and TD 17 Message Displays for their efficiency and durability. The choice of the WinCC SCADA programming software, with Profibus DP network systems, was made because the software is renowned for reliable data transmission between components.
