CALOUNDRA CITY COUNCIL - KAWANA WATERS POLLUTION CONTROL WORKS UPGRADE Job No: #860

After submitting the most competitive and conforming engineering solution for a major Waste Water Treatment Plant upgrade for Kawana Water Pollution Control Works, MPA Engineering was subcontracted by Kilpatrick Green Pty. Ltd. (the main project contractor) to design, supply and commission the major components for the extension of the plant’s electrical distribution, instrumentation and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition System. The project included the design, and construction of four distribution switchboards including auto-transfer to a stand-by generator. There are also five motor control switchboards, four of which are aluminium, weather proof and installed in exposed areas of the plant.

The pump and motor control system includes 18 variable speed drives ranging from 1.5kW to 132kW in size and various D.O.L. motor starters. MPA Engineering was also responsible for the detailed design and implementation of the SCADA and PLC system. This included interfacing to PLC and control systems of six other suppliers. The upgraded effluent treatment process is highly automated and is under the continuous control of a SIEMENS 115U PLC connected to 8 remote ET100 I/O units via a serial data network. There are more than 40 analogue instruments connected to the PLC system and 12 of the VSD’s are controlled by closed loop PID functions in the main PLC processor.

The plant operator can access all plant information and coordinate systems via the SCADA computer, which has been skilfully programmed to offer a simple and effective operator interface to the entire plant. MPA has the facility to remotely access and modify the SCADA or PLC system via modem to allow adjustment of operational parameters and plant logic if required.
